Skeptics keep predicting an AI winter. They're wrong. Here's a structural analysis of why this AI wave is fundamentally different from every previous one.
Every few months, a prominent voice publishes a piece arguing that the current AI wave is headed for a winter. The reasoning usually goes: the hype has outpaced the reality, enterprise adoption is slower than expected, hallucinations make AI unreliable for production use, and the current generation of models has inherent limitations that can't be solved by simply scaling.

Why AI Winters Happened Before#

Previous AI winters happened partly because the companies investing in AI could pull back without major sunk cost issues. That option doesn't exist today. The infrastructure is built. The cloud providers need to amortize it. The incentive structure is locked in.

The early application of large language models — chat interfaces, writing assistance, code completion — has already crossed the chasm for mainstream adoption. Those aren't going to winter. They're default features now.

- A breakthrough from a different paradigm that makes current approaches obsolete (this would be a winter for current approaches but not for AI overall)
- A complete collapse in compute investment that starves model development (current investment trajectories make this implausible)
None of these are likely in the near term. The technological, economic, and institutional momentum is too strong.
